4/20-21 – Rescheduled Mulch Delivery Weekend, Volunteers Needed
Here are several updates we know about from around the school:
- Mulch Delivery Weekend has been postponed to April 20th and 21st due to the weather forecast: After closely watching the forecast, the mulch committee felt that it was necessary to reschedule mulch delivery weekend to April 20th and 21st. The possibility of snow and ice presented a risk to the many student and parent volunteers that was not worth taking. We’ve delivered in all sorts of conditions through the years (remember last year’s cold, wet delivery Saturday and the extreme heat of several years ago), but this forecast was too ominous. So…couldn’t help this coming weekend? You’re in luck! Your help is needed on the new weekend! See below for sign up links. (Mulch spreading, for those who purchased it, will be April 22nd with a rain date of April 29th.)
- Mulch Day Volunteer Sign-Ups – Your Help is Still Needed!: Many volunteers and food donations are needed to make this a success! Students earn service hours and funds for up to two clubs/sports and can win prizes, plus have fun with friends! All students can help – from the most petite to the most burly and everyone in between, everyone can participate! Here are the sign-up links: student volunteers; parent/guardian volunteers; and food donations. Please help make this annual community event successful again this year! Students planning to apply for the PTSA scholarship now or in the future—this is an important piece of PTSA volunteering that is part of the application.
- Class of 2018 All Night Graduation Celebration: Tickets are now on sale! Volunteers are needed! Please contact Kathleen Whitman at kwhitmangarden@gmail.com . Many hands make light work….the more the merrier.
- PTSA Scholarship Application: The PTSA is pleased to announce that the 2018 scholarship applications are available. Completed applications are due to the WHS Career Center by 2:30 pm on May 4th. Applications can be found here: PTSA Scholarship and PTSA Special Education Scholarship. Please carefully read the application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Good luck!
- 2018-2019 new schedule change process: Please ensure that your student makes appropriate class choices. New for the next school year: there will be no schedule changes permitted between June 11th and the 3rd week of the new school year.
- Run for Remembrance in Honor of Mike Greiner and Conor Bouveron, Sunday May 20th: Registration is open for the 1K walk and 5K run being held in remembrance of Mike Greiner and Conor Bouveron, two beloved WHS members lost in 2015 and 2016. To register, click here.

Ben Afferton, Aislin Carpenter, Andrew Gantzler, Emma Grenfell, Ethan Hanover, Scarlett Sullivan, and Emma Wolfe! They are representing Westfield this weekend in Richmond! Congratulations!
- National History Day State Competition Qualifiers: Congratulations to the following students who successfully competed in the regional National History Day competition and were selected to compete at the state competition on April 21st in Richmond! Westfield has two qualifying teams in the group website category: Michelle Jacobs and Devina Bawa for their project titled “A Movement Divided: Conflict and Compromise in British Suffrage and Dakini Long and Ryan Bowen for their project titled “Chinese Exclusion Act: Repercussions. In the group documentary category, Josie Morris, Maddie Rose, and Erin Carlson’s project “The Treat to Versailles” was selected. Congratulations students and also to their fantastic history teachers! The deadline to register is August 1st and there are no refunds. The registration form is attached. If your student will be participating in marching band, please do not register for the boot camp as band students learn the information and more during band camp.
- Chorus Fundraiser at Chick fil A: On Monday, April 9th from 5-8 pm, please support the WHS Chorus Department by eating at Chick-fil-A at Chantilly Place (the new one at FFC). Please print or show the attached flier to the cashier before ordering.
- Turbo-Tutoring SAT Prep: Preparing for the May SAT? Turbo-tutoring has two upcoming prep classes on April 25th and April 28th. For more information and to register, see the attached flier or visit this link.
- Girls Fitness Self-Defense Class: Mrs. Grinups and the Fairfax County Police Department recently hosted a self-defense class for the Girls Fitness classes. The PTSA was pleased to provide administrative support for the event. Led by Detective Laura Tiso, the team of three women instructors provided and informative presentation for the students. There was a presentation on safety tips and what to do in everyday life situations faced by many. This was followed by a 2 ½ hour defensive skills interactive lesson where the students learned real defensive skills: punching, blocking, and kicking at an attacker. Mrs. Grinups was very proud of her students. They learned how to defend themselves, be assertive in their body language and words (NO!), and how to recognize unsafe situations so they stay safe. Thank you Mrs. Grinups for your continued dedication and support for our students!
- Yarn Donations still requested: The WHS librarians are sponsoring a volunteer opportunity for students after school on Mondays in the library. Students will be able to knit scarves for the homeless. This project is in conjunction with SOME.org and students will be able to earn community service hours. This is a project that is offered at Stone MS, so we hope to encourage students to continue this work at Westfield. To help get this project rolling, donations of yarn have been requested: Red Heart brand yarn, acrylic (washable), weight category 4, dark colors only, and from smoke-and-pet-free homes (due to allergies). Questions? Please contact Ms. Koenig at amkoenig@fcps.edu.
