HAPPENINGS:
2/12 - Singing Valentine order deadline
2/13 – Chipotle fundraiser for Math Honor Society
2/15 – PTSA Meeting – Human Trafficking Presentation, 7 pm
2/16-2/18 – Theatre’s presentation of Avenue Q
2/19 – President’s Day Holiday, no school
Here are several updates we know about from around the school:
- PTSA Meeting with Human Trafficking Presentation: Thursday, 2/15 at 7 pm in the Cafeteria. Following a brief business meeting, we will hear from guest speaker Giovanna Hernandez-Williams. How much do you know about the problem of human trafficking? Are our students at risk? Our speaker will shed light on the realities of this growing crime in our area. Parents and students (middle and high school) are encouraged to attend.
- “A” Day Raffle Thank Yous!: Thank you to Andrea Jacobs for organizing the 2nd quarter “A” Day raffle! And thank you to our parent volunteers who helped make it successful: JJ Conner, Susan Dickinson, Kristi Finn, Vanessa Moore, Karen Paul Mychalus, Renee Ohanian, Mary Rubens, and Diane Spindel! Congratulations to the students who won the raffles and to all who earned A’s this quarter!
- 2/12 – Deadline to purchase a singing valentine for your student! Valentines will be presented by a small group of choir students who will hand deliver candy, a small stuffed animal, a card from you, and a song! Valentines are $5 each. Please see the attached flier for information! Deadline is Monday, February 12th. Contact Mary Bidinger at mbidinger@verizon.net
- Chipotle fundraiser for Math Honor Society: Please support the Math Honor Society by eating at Chipotle (5049 Westfield Blvd) between 4-8 pm on Tuesday, February 13th. Please either bring the attached flier or save it to your phone and show it to the cashier.
- Mulch Sale has begun: Winter may not be done with us yet, but soon it will be time to get your yard ready for spring! Make it easy on yourself and have your mulch delivered right to your driveway on April 6th or 7th by Westfield students! Every year, the high-quality, double-shredded mulch and and the available spreading service sell out! Because this is an all-volunteer fundraiser, there is a limit to the total number of bags able to be delivered. If you order early (15 bag minimum, WHS boundaries), you’ll be assured free delivery to your driveway. Each 3 cubic foot bag is $5, of which $2.60 may be tax deductible (depending on your specific circumstances). To order, please either go online or download the attached form and return it to Westfield along with a check. Questions? Please email bulldogmulch@westfieldhs.org
- Mulch Day Volunteer Sign-Ups: Mulch Day is fast approaching! Many volunteers and food donations are needed to make this a success! Here are the sign-up links: student volunteers; parent/guardian volunteers; and food donations. Please help make this annual community event successful again this year!
- WHS Theatre presents Avenue Q: Come see the talented WHS Theatre Department presentation Friday, 2/16 at 7 pm; Saturday, 2/17 at 7 pm; and Sunday, 2/18 at 2 pm. For information and to buy tickets in advance, click here. Set out to find his purpose, college graduate Princeton moves to the run-down neighborhood of Avenue Q in New York City. Teeming with a quirky character, Avenue Q is not what Princeton envisioned for life after receiving his B.A. in English. Facing challenges with his new neighbors, finding love, and losing love, Princeton must pave his way in the big city. Inspired by the children's show Sesame Street, Avenue Q: School Edition shows the humor in the difficulties of adult life in an innovative and imaginative way. With a book by Jeff Whitty and music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Westfield Theatre is sure to delight audiences in this whimsically puppet-filled, musical comedy. Tickets are $10 in advance or with student ID and $12 at the door. The theatre department is collecting nonperishable food to donate to a local food pantry. Please consider bringing an item to donate.
- Virginia PTA Senior Scholarship Program: Scholarships are awarded based on demonstrated commitment to and engagement in community service, academic achievement, and financial need. The deadline is March 1st and you must have been a ptsa member by December 1st. For more information, click here.
- Plan ahead for dinner on 2/26 and support the WHS Robotics Team: On Monday, February 26th, the WHS Robotics “Dogs of Steel” will hold a dinner fundraiser at Foster’s, 5007 Westone Plaza (down the road from WHS). A portion of sales at Foster’s between 4 – 9 pm that afternoon will be donated to the team. Thank you Foster’s for supporting WHS!
- Turbo Tutoring SAT (2/24) Prep: Attached is an informational flier for Turbo Tutoring, an SAT and ACT prep program used by many WHS students through the years. This program consists of a strategy session for taking the test which is completed in one block of time. Click here for information about the program and click here to register. Or, see the attached flier for more information.
- Yarn Donations: The WHS librarians are sponsoring a volunteer opportunity for students after school on Mondays in the library. Students will be able to knit scarves for the homeless. This project is in conjunction with SOME.org and students will be able to earn community service hours. This is a project that is offered at Stone MS, so we hope to encourage students to continue this work at Westfield. To help get this project rolling, donations of yarn have been requested: Red Heart brand yarn, acrylic (washable), weight category 4, dark colors only, and from smoke-and-pet-free homes (due to allergies). Questions? Please contact Ms. Koenig at amkoenig@fcps.edu.
