Here are several updates from the PTSA and several groups around WHS:
- PLEASE HELP support WHS by volunteering for a 2014-2015 WHS PTSA vacancy! The time commitment varies for each position with some being minimal and others needing a little more time. The following positions are available: 2nd Vice President (year long), Special Education Chair (year long—work with Special Ed Department Chair), Membership Chair, Directory Chair (early in school year), Bulldog BBQ Co-Chair (summer—NEEDED asap—learn how it’s done from an experienced co-chair), Legislative Representative (year long), and Parent Programs Coordinator (plan 2 events per year). Please consider donating a little of your time to helping make Westfield a success! Rising 9th grade parents are encouraged and invited to volunteer – what a great way to get to know the school.
- Staff/Teacher Appreciation Lunch: A thank you luncheon, sponsored by the PTSA, is being planned for Westfield teachers and staff! Donations are needed to make this event successful. Please sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/whsbulldog
- Congratulations to Akash Bhargava! Akash is the winner of a $50 Visa Gift Card! His name was drawn from among all who purchased ANGP tickets by June 1st.
- ANGP Tickets: The price is now $75 per ticket. This is a “will call” event – no physical ticket will be given to your student. As long as your student’s name is listed on the PTSA website (see link below), your student should check in at the event between 11:00 pm and midnight. A volunteer will call the parent of any student who does not arrive by midnight. Parents: please remember to complete Risk Forms. Copies are in the main office and on the PTSA website at ptsa.westfieldhs.org under the ANGP ticket tab. Every attendee must have the forms completed, even if they are 18 years old. Contact Jeannie Donahue with questions at jr.donahue@verizon.net To see the list of who has purchased a ticket so far, visit: http://ptsa.westfieldhs.org/students/see-who-is-coming-to-the-party.html Reduced price tickets are available for those who qualify (see your guidance counselor).
- Fast Eddie’s Update: Fast Eddie’s was recently sold and the facility is currently undergoing a minor, primarily cosmetic renovation. Additionally, the name will change, though we do not yet know what the new name will be. When your student arrives at the ANGP event (located between Trader Joe’s and the US Post Office), he/she will see the presence of our check-in volunteers, WHS signage and FCPD Officers.
- Adult volunteers are needed to help at the Senior BBQ on Friday, June 13th from 11:30-2:00 pm. Help is needed with set up, serving and clean up. Please sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/whsbulldog
- Senior parents: There is still time to order the senior class panoramic picture that was taken last fall. The link to order is: https://vando.imagequix.com/1299019766 Also, as an fyi, images from graduation will be uploaded to the same gallery a few days following graduation.
- SOLS: Congratulations to all staff members involved with SOL testing on a successful test schedule so far! Additional SOL testing will begin on Thursday and students involved have been notified. Please work with your students to ensure they are ready for the testing and avoid appointments during this time.
- Thank you to all who volunteered with Prom Tickets and at Prom Check-in! And, congratulations to the class sponsors, Kylie Eldredge and Amy Sutphin, and class officers for a successful event!
- Changing school start times is being discussed again by the School Board and FCPS. Please be informed and get involved. There are pros and cons to both sides of the issue. According to Sully School Board Representative Kathy Smith, one of the four options currently listed will be approved, at a cost of several million dollars ($2MM to $7MM, depending on the approved plan – according to FCPS published information). Please be a voice for your opinion of the issue. Let all members of the School Board know your thoughts. For more information on the four possible changes to the FCPS start time schedule, please visit http://www.fcps.edu/news/starttimes.shtml
- Community meetings to discuss the proposed start time changes will be held between May 19th and June 11th with the closest to WHS and June 11th at Centreville HS. Dates and times are posted at: FCPS Announces Community Meetings on School Start Times
- Online Survey about start time changes: FCPS offers an online survey regarding the changing start times. Visit fcps.edu or https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/starttimes to take the survey.
- Budget Impacts at Westfield: Due to budget shortfalls, there will be several changes at Westfield next year. Class sizes will increase, several teaching positions have been eliminated, and the attendance office will be closed, to name a few. This has been an extremely difficult budget season, to say the least.
- Westfield Reads Program announced: This year, all students and staff will read Peak, by Roland Smith. For more information on Westfield Reads and other summer assignments, please visit the WHS website: http://www.fcps.edu/WestfieldHS/index.html
- The Westfield Sports Physical Night is scheduled for Monday, June 16th. This is a great way to get your student’s VHSL physical for the 2014-2015 school year and it supports the awesome Athletic Training Department! To register, visit http://www.fcps.edu/supt/activities/atp/ppe/register-athlete.shtml
- Ordering from AMAZON? Please go to the PTSA website and click on the Amazon link that is on the right side of the page, about half-way down. Once you click, you’ll be taken to Amazon and can order as usual. A percentage of your order total will be donated to the WHS PTSA – at no cost to you! Thank you for your support of this “silent fundraiser” set up by our Ways and Means Chairperson, Bhavani Koneru!
- Class of 2018 Bulldog Bootcamp registration is ongoing. Information available at: http://www.fcps.edu/WestfieldHS/academics/summerassignments/summerassign/bootcamp.pdf
- Fairfax Public Access is offering TV and radio summer camps for teens aged 12-18. Visit www.fcac.org for more information.
- Junior/Sophomore Parents: Summer SAT preparation classes are being offered through Turbo-Tutoring on August 5th at Briar Woods HS. For information and to sign up, visit www.turbo-tutoring.com
