Here are several updates from the PTSA and several groups around WHS:
1. THANK YOU to all who helped make mulch day successful! We could not have delivered the 13,000+ bags of mulch without hundreds of volunteers! A special thanks to: Becky Free and John Sodomka (co-chairs), Karen Duncan, Mark Avila, Takako Rodriguez, Jennifer and Ron Campbell, Julie and Joe Glowacki, Karen Fiala, Mark Rogers, Mark Cutlip, Mary Coleman, Alex Callas, Suzanne Olijar and Boy Scouts Troop 30. A huge thank you to the companies who donated trucks for the day: Building Infrastructure Group, Clippers Landscaping, Cox Farms, G&C Tire and Auto Service, Katchmark Construction, Living Colour, Pollen Trucking, and RulyScapes, as well as the many parents who brought their personal vehicles to be used for delivery! Thanks to Starbucks on Stone Road, Harry King and Nabisco, and Chick-fil-A for their generous donations! Finally, thank you to all at Westfield who helped get the word out about mulch day: especially SGA, Ms. Salzman, Mrs. Towle, Mr. Welch, Mr. Thomas, Mrs. Kirschner, Mr. Mandigo and Ms. Jones!
2.Congratulations to the following students who won prizes on mulch day: Will Dzubak, Corey Chen, Daniel Eberhardt, Brandon P., Joseph Aversa, Ali Ebodi, Joseph Callas, Kevin Yeo and Caroline Kwon.
3. Thank you for all who donated blood and to all who volunteered at last week’s WHS Blood Drive! Thank you for giving the gift of life!
4. PTSA Nominating Committee Members Needed: It’s time to think about the 2014-2015 PTSA Board. We seek three people to serve as the nominating committee. If you are interested, please contact cpisarcikptsa@cox.net Thanks!
5.PTSA A.C.E. Scholarships: The Class of 2014 PTSA Scholarship applications are available in the Career Center and at our website: ptsa.westfieldhs.org . General and special education scholarship applications are available. The application deadline is Friday, April 25, 2014 at 2:30 pm.
6. Congratulations to Kayla O’Sullivan! Kayla’s name was drawn from the many names of seniors whose ANGP ticket was purchased by 3/31/14. She won the Sony Make.Believe speakers.
7.ANGP Tickets: The price is now $70 per ticket, with the next price increase set for June 1st. Parents: please remember to complete the Risk Forms. There are copies in the main office and also on the PTSA website at ptsa.westfieldhs.org Every graduate must have the forms completed, even if they are 18 years old. 8. Casino Dealers Needed for the June 18th All Night Grad Casino! Please email Nicole Ohanian at jnjjo@msn.com or Ellen Ryder as lsryder@cox.net with questions or if you are interested.
9. A.C.E. Co-chair needed: The PTSA seeks a co-chair for the Academic Celebration of Excellence program. Work with a great co-chair on the Honor Roll and the PTSA scholarship program. Please email: andriagregory@gmail.com with questions or if interested.
10. Congratulations to the following Westfield HS Orchestras who participated in the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association State Orchestra Assessments held at West Springfield HS on March 14-15: The Freshman Orchestra received a Superior Rating, the Concert Orchestra received a rating of Excellent, and the Symphony Orchestra received a Superior rating. Congratulations to all students involved in this endeavor.
11. Congratulations to the WHS Jazz Band! The band won 1st place at last week’s Chantilly Jazz Festival! Congrats to Mr. Schnepper too!
12. The next Turbo Tutoring SAT test prep session at Westfield HS is scheduled for Saturday, April 26. Please visit www.turbo-tutoring.com for information.
13. The PTSA is honored to have approved several staff mini-grants recently. These include payments for/to: National History Day entrance fees (local and state), World Languages Department-National Foreign Languages Week, Government Department (test prep flash cards), English Department (books), and the Girls Fitness Classes (heart rate monitors).
14. Do you believe Human Trafficking only affects immigrants? Or that victims of Human Trafficking will immediately seek help? On Wednesday, April 9th, 2014 from 7:30-9 P.M. the Citizen’s Advisory Committee will host an expert to debunk the myths of Human Trafficking and talk about how it affects Fairfax County. You will also learn to recognize the signs of Human Trafficking and where to seek help. R.S.V.P. is not required to attend this presentation. Presentation is at Sully District Police Station, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd, Chantilly, VA.
15. Did you know there are approximately 33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs and prison gangs who are criminally active in the United States today? Join us on Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 from 7:30-9 P.M. to learn about various gangs affecting Fairfax County as well as a look into the gang lifestyle. R.S.V.P. is not required to attend this presentation. Presentation is at Sully District Police Station, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd, Chantilly, VA.
16. Jim LeMunyon, Member of the VA House of Delegates writes: If you see a pothole you may report the problem to VDOT online at http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/citizen.asp or by calling 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623). VDOT will investigate each report and will schedule repairs as soon as possible
