Are you interested in encouraging students’ understanding of and interest in science? Do you work as a scientist or engineer? Or do you have a hobby or interest in another science related field? If so, then please consider volunteering a few hours of your time to judge the Westfield High School Science Fair.
On Thursday, February 1, 2018, students will be participating in our school science fair. This is a valuable experience and for many this type of independent research is their first experience with hands-on science. The fair provides students the opportunity to see not only what their peers have done, but also to gain the experience of presenting to and getting feedback from knowledgeable adults.
You do not need an advanced degree in the field, but we will be asking you to assess the students’ abilities to communicate their understanding of the experiment, as well as their scientific thought and process.
At the 2017 FCPS Regional Science and Engineering Fair, our students won 13 category awards (one honorable mention, three 3rd place winners, two 2nd place winners and seven 1st place winners) and 9 corporate awards including books, invitations to corporate functions, a tour of the DEA Testing and research lab and cash awards.
Six of the first place winners went to the state fair and two projects received awards.
We even had two Grand Prize winners, in Animal Sciences and Mathematics, who earned an all-expense paid week long trip to INTEL’s ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) in Los Angeles California to compete alongside of student scientists around the globe.
